译学学科的发展依赖于研究者在三个方面的深入研究和结合。一是对本国译学的继承性研究；二是对外国译学的借鉴性研究；三是对翻译实践和翻译教学中新问题的探索性研究。“国外翻译研究丛书”正是借鉴性研究的主要资源。该丛书涉及的论著时间跨度大，既有经典，也有新论，所选书目皆为译学发展史上具有里程碑作用的名家名著，堪称译学经典。该丛书的出版解决了国内翻译教学原版参考书多年匮乏的困难，成为我国翻译教学与理论研究的“及时雨”。
“模因”承载着本质性的文化特征，并传播文化。本书把“模因”最为翻译理论中的基本概念单位，结合波普尔关于知识进化的图式，对翻译规范和策略进行描述性研究，把不同历史时期的重要翻译理论和翻译思想贯穿起来，建立了系统的翻译理论框架。
