本书分析了社会、文化与口译互动方面的学术活动和科研状况，指出迄今为止相关课题的学术研究成果多囿于认知学和心理语言学的范畴，很少有人将会议口译当做设于语境中的行动来研究。作者从社会和文化的角度出发，将会议口译员设在会议语境中，考察了社会和文化语境与口译员在会场的存在及其口译表现之间的动态关系。
      第一章对迄今为止相关课题的学术研究成果进行了归纳总结，着重分析了社会、文化与口译互动方面的学术活动和科研状况。
      第二章描绘了会议口译行为发生的社会、文化语境，从使用者的期待、译员的口译表现和译员行业协会的职业道德等方面阐述了社会对口译员的标准和口译员对自己的定位。
      第三章中，作者以一次国际会议为案例，进行了语料的宏观层面的对比分析。
      第四章集中分析了会议发言的录音和两位口译员的录音，分析了口译过程中的人称转换。
      第五章则将前面两章的宏观和微观的语料分析进行了对比，得出一个结论：行业协会和口译员自己在宏观层面上的标准在会议实际语境中并不一定能实现。作者也同时指出在具体语境中研究会议口译的工作任重而道远。
