To Our Students
This book was inspired by the students in our writing classes. We enjoyed teaching themand reading their papers. We hope you find the papers equally enjoyable, and that they inspire you to write with confidence
The papers are examples of good student writing although some are better than others andall could be improved in some way.All of these papers began as rough drafts and were revisedby the students, often a number of times, with the help of their classmates and teachers.Althoughwe have edited the papers to some extent, they remain the voice of our students, expressing theirideas in powerful and often delightful ways.
We have included student papers in most chapters to stress the importance of reading.Writing is closely connected to reading;we therefore encourage you to read at every opportunityin order to become a good writer.
