杨惠中和王跃武主编的《学术英语视听说》充分 体现了学术英语课程的内容特点。语言教学必须围绕 一定的题材来选择语言素材。学术英语的题材选择要 有知识性、趣味性、现实性、时代性；内容可以广泛 涉及现代科技、历史地理、生物医学、人文管理等方 面，但不包含小说、诗歌等文学材料，因为文学语言 不能反映学术英语的语言特征和交际功能。本教材每 一课都是一个独立的讲演，围绕一个题材进行。都有 一定的学术内容，但不含艰深的专业知识，使用的是 典型的规范的学术英语。另外，口语交际必然涉及听 和说两方面，因此本教材采用任务型教学的方式，将 语言和内容充分融合，重点发展听力、培养记笔记的 能力，并进行听说读写综合训练。除了围绕交际功能 和题材所选择的各种语言素材外，本教材还着重介绍 各种会话策略，进行仿说练习，逐步增加自由表达的 开放式练习，帮助学生准确地表达自己的观点、意见 ，获得参加讨论和进行辩论的能力。
